Results of Araucaria Cluing Contest 80: INDIRECTS

I proposed this contest because in my first posting to this group,
possibly a year ago, it was to discuss the fairness of the type of
clue called for here. I had seen a number of this type in the London
Times puzzle collections from Penguin which occasionally (but all
too rarely) are available in US bookstores. The responses suggested
that it would make a fitting topic for the Araucaria Cluing Contest, so
here in my first chance at moderating an ACC I let that be my guide.

The responses contained some really fine clues which unfortnately
had no indirect aspect to them. There were also some really fine
clues in which the indirection was so obscure as to be unsolvable;
be included in an actual crossword. The best clues found the middle,
and yet retained all of the other desired qualities of a good clue.
They also clung more closely to the exact qualities of indirects-
letting the action described in the clue describe the action taken by
the solver to construct the cryptic.

The winner is Kevin Wald, for clue number 8, and the runner up Phil
Rose, for number 10. Kevin has graciously agreed to moderate ACC81.

The list of entries follows. They are fun to solve, but remember,
some are not indirects, and some are REALLY HARD. The solutions
follow, with commentary, and a number of bonus clues are at the
end (with solutions).

---------------------------------------------------------------------
THE ENTRIES

1.Hurry in the opposite direction to the escapee (7)
2.Free French who interact (6)
3.Sent to sleep from behind the pulpit? (5)
4.Ovation after Princess's broadcast? (10)
5.Civil War ironclad of North: it's not on
   the shop's front shelves (3,7)
6.Crane hunter pursues last heron from Norway (8)
7.Bus union approved leaflets for strikes (9)
8.New leader defenestrated the Queen Mother, for example (5)
9.Throttle student in eerie surrounding (8)
10.Encountered regressive shock treatment - ecstasy? (6)
11.Those not selected as spouses? (6)
12.He is losing ultimate Armageddon! (3)

THE SOLUTIONS:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1.Hurry in the opposite direction to the escapee (7)

Hurry = run
opposite direction = away
escapee = RUNAWAY

>Perfectly fine clue, but not in the spirit of the contest.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Free French who interact (6)
  Free = defn.
  French who = QUI
  interact = within "ACT" -> AC(QUI)T

>A lovely clue, actually, but not really what I was looking for.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sent to sleep from behind the pulpit? (5)

sent to sleep = bored
behind the pulpit? = sounding board
sounding = homophone indicator
board sounds like bored
maybe 'from' could be an indirectness indicator

>The first one on the list to provide a real indirect clue,
>and is fairly clever, too. Surface a bit shaky, though.
>Honorable mention to Robert Galejs.

------------------------------------------------
Ovation after Princess's broadcast? (10)

SOLUTION: Distribute
EXPLANATION:
   Ovation = tribute
   Princess's = Di's
   Broadcast = definition
(Thus, tribute after Di's)

> Again a good solid cryptic but not what the rules called for.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Civil War ironclad of North: it's not on the shop's front shelves (3,7)

    "Civil War ironclad" = def., "The Monitor"
    "North" = "n"
    "it" = "it"
    "'s not on the shop's front shelves" = "in the back room"
    "back" = reversal indicator; "the back room" = "the moor"
         so "N + it" in "moor" = "The Monitor"

>Well I liked this one. Even though the surface makes no sense
>at all :), it has enough of a straight definition to
>be solvable, at least for those from the USA, has an indirect which
>one can see, at least after solving it. Honorable mention to Brian
>Spollen.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Crane hunter pursues last heron from Norway (8)

Crane hunter = ORSEMAN (literal pun - "headless HORSEMAN")
     pursues = goes after
  last heron = N
 from Norway = definition of N ORSEMAN

The phrasing made it inappropriate for a ? ending to indicate the
pun, since "Crane" had to be first to disguise the capitalization
of (Ichabod) Crane, which puts the ? too far from the pun. There
is also the pursues="goes after" pun.

>Very clever but too hard. Goes over the top, I think, with the
>use of "crane hunter" rather than a straightforward reference to
>Ichabod.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Bus union approved leaflets for strikes (9)

     DOWN clue
   bus             BUS
   union           U (a common abbreviation)
   approved        PRAISED
   leaflets        TRACTS
   strikes         definition

   U + PRAISED = upraised
   BUS upraised + TRACTS = the solution, SUBTRACTS

>This one goes over the top, too. It goes one step beyond the
>requirements by charading the cryptic indicator itself (upraised=
>u+praised) rather than the cryptic action.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
New leader defenestrated the Queen Mother, for example (5)

      the Queen Mother, for example = WIDOW
	 (Being a widow is, in fact, generally a prerequisite for being
	  the Queen Mother, if you think about it.)

      New leader = N
      defenestrated = thrown out of window
      N "thrown out of" WINDOW = WIDOW

>A beauty. "Defenestrated" is one of those words which is
>paradoxically well-known for being obscure, so that my guess is
>everyone on this group knows what it means. That given, the solution
>is obtainable, and while the straight definition is a bit obscure, it
>fits in the surface reading of political upheavel. It is also exactly
>the sort of clue I was looking for; creative within the confines of the
>type of clue given in the examples. Top prize to Kevin Wald.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Throttle student in eerie surrounding (8)

Throttle = definition for STRANGLE
student = learner = L
in = insertion indicator
eerie surrounding = STRANGE

>Perfectly good clue, but no indirection.
---------------------------------------------------
Encountered regressive shock treatment - ecstasy? (6)

Encountered = RAN into (indirect charade)
shock treatment - ECT (electroconvulsive therapy)
regressive         - ECT => TCE
                     T(RAN)CE
ecstasy            - definition - TRANCE

>Shockingly good clue! Gets at the essence of indirection-- I mildly
>question the straight definition. Runner up to Phil Rose.
-------------------------------------------------
  Those not selected as spouses? (6)

Answer: LOVERS
	for which a charade could be LEFT+OVERS
	which are things or people not selected.

> Tom Deneau, this clue's submitter, thought it too
>difficult. Perhaps, though not as difficult as the
>one to come...

------------------------------------------------------------

He is losing ultimate Armageddon! (3)

WORD: God
EXPL:

"He" - (w/ uppercase H, of course) a patriarch's def.
"is" - "is constructed by"
"losing" - PLACING LAST => G
"ultimate" - SECOND TO NONE => O
"Armageddon" - END OF THE WORLD => D

The whole thing *may* be &lit (hence the bang), but only time will tell! :-P

Notes: to be cryptically correct, should be "PLACING'S LAST" or
       "LAST OF PLACING" or such, and the "THE" in "EOTW" is extraneous,
       but I'm not expecting to win, just hoping for a few smiles! :-)

> This was characterized by it's submitter as a bit much, and of course
>I would have to agree. But the constructor, David Eggleston, got his
>wish. I got a good chuckle from this one.

Everlasting Latin favorite (3)
