   Vehicle reversed, leading to house's destruction (5, 3)

      Vehicle = STOCK CAR

      house's = COT'S
      destruction = RACK (as in "rack and ruin")
      "leading to" COTS, RACK = RACKCOTS
      reversed, RACKCOTS = STOCK CAR

Fairly good clues. In the first, "reversed" sticks out a bit
as an indicator.

>From Murray Smith (smithmw@direct.ca)

1) See about music group The Fighting Temeraire (8)	(container clue)

Explanation: The Fighting Temeraire is a well-known 1839 seascape by the
English painter Joseph Turner. ASCAP is the acronym for the American
Society of Composers, Authors,and Publishers (ensures songwriters get
paid royalties).

	SE (ASCAP) E
--------------------
2) STEALTH	(fill-in-the-blank clue)

Abbie Hoffman's ____ is Book subterfuge (7)

Explanation: 'Steal This Book' is an underground classic published around
1970. It caused widespread controversy because the youth of that era took
the title as a directive, causing booksellers much grief. The book was a
primer on stealthy activity related to activism. This could be regarded
as a partial &lit with 'subterfuge' as the standard definition element.
'Book' is capitalised to show it's part of a title and also to misdirect
towards the Bible.

STEAL THis Book
--------------------
3) STOCK CAR	(definitions by example)

Is side-tracked in Chicago, but quickly makes rounds door-to-door (5,3)

Explanation: Chicago is a rail-head with many abattoirs. NASCAR etc.
stock cars race on oval circuits 'door-to-door', as opposed to F1 and
Indy cars etc. which race 'open-wheel' - usually on a twisty track.
======
Comments:
I found the second-clue "blank" a little distracting;
incomplete. Liked the "side-tracked..." part of third clue.

>From Don Monson (dmonson@direct.ca)

1) NASCAR-bound in livestock carrier? (8)

   NASCAR-bound    - the definition. . . sort of. . . I guess
   IN - (along with double-duty BOUND) is hidden word indicator
   liveSTOCK CARrier - hidden word holder

    incorrect) you may remove it!)

2) Destroy the last bomber (7)

   BOMBER       - definition

3) A Winslow Homer painting, see, contains composition, organization (8)

   A WINSLOW HOMER PAINTING - typically a seascape

======
Comments:
Very iffy first-clue definition; not-very-hidden hidden word.
Good second clue. Comma between "composition" and
"organization" undesirable.

------------------------------------------------------------

>From Brian Westley (merlyn@dgii.com)

I heard Ms. Channing didn't finish that particular race (5,3)

             I heard = homonym indicator
        Ms. Channing = Stockard (not Carol)
       didn't finish = remove "d"
that particular race = "stock car" defined as a type of race (stock car race)

Taketh away? (7)

    Single punny definition of "steal-th". Marred because
    "stealth" *really does* come from "steal-eth". Oh well.
    I kind of like it anyway.

Ease around top after starting to scale, say, the white cliffs of Dover (8)

                          ease = EASE
                        around = container indicator
                           top = CAP (EAScapE)
                         after = after
             starting to scale = S (sEAScapE)
say, the white cliffs of Dover = example of a SEASCAPE

======
Comments:
Very amusing first-clue image of Carol C. galvanting about.
Second clue would seem to clue "stealeth" rather than
"stealth". Third clue: would one be easing around the top
after *starting* to scale cliffs?

Railroad type found at Daytona (5,3)
  straightforward double-definition

I'd like to beg your indulgence as I submit two clues for "STEALTH".
Please take your preference. I was intrigued by the difficulty of
finding a straight definition for this word that was the right part
of speech (I kept defnining "STEALTHY" by accident).

>From Phil Rose (pvr@wg.icl.co.uk)

13) This motor races out of the showroom? (5,3)

Punny double definition. A STOCK CAR is used in racing, and a
car that is delivered ex-STOCK comes from stock held in the
showroom.

7) Looks at headland within earshot of a view of waves crashing (8)

Looks at headland => SEES CAPE
within earshot        -   homophone indicator
a view of waves crashing => definition (SEASCAPE)

The two words separately are not exactly homophones but together
the elision makes the S at the end of SEES unvoiced.

11) Quiet invasion destroys latest hospital (7)

Quiet invasion        => definition (STEALTH)
destroys              - anagram indicator
latest                => LATEST => STEALT
Hospital => H (standard UK abbrev. as used on roadsigns)
STEALT+H              => STEALTH
======
Comments:
First clue --- two definitions aren't all that different. In
second clue, "earshot" and "view" seem mismatched in the surface.

	Stand beds backward to hold an animal in its tracks? (8)

	STAND -- RACK
	BEDS  -- COTS
	BACKWARD -- reversal indicator  (STOC-KCAR)
	TO HOLD AN ANIMAL IN ITS TRACKS? -- punny defn. (since
	   a stockcar is a railroad car that carries cattle, it certainly
	   is "holding an animal in its (railroad) tracks)

	Hidden in haste, although sneaking done quietly (7)

	HIDDEN IN -- "contained" indicator
	HASTE, ALTHOUGH -- container (haSTE, ALTHough)
	SNEAKING DONE QUIETLY -- defn.

	Sound, to taper off at headland! (8)

	SOUND -- homophone indicator
	TO TAPER OFF AT -- CEASE
	HEADLAND -- CAPE (cryptic sounds like CEASE-CAPE)
	This is a weak &lit., since it describes a sample
	   seascape (a strait [or "sound"] narrowing and disappearing as
	   a promontory cuts it off). I used "headland" instead
	   of "promontory" or "peninsula" for deceptive affect,
	   in case someone tries to play with HEADLAND = L.
======
Comments:
In the first clue, "in its tracks" doesn't feel quite right in the
definition. Second clue: very good, particularly the hidden
cryptic. Third clue lacks "view" or "painting" aspect.

Comments:
First clue: I don't much like the "eyed" part, and the
anagram indicator is a bit far from its fodder. Second:
unless you're referring to a raid other than the one in
April 1986, only F-111, A-6, and A-7 (non-Stealth) planes
were used; Stealth aircraft weren't used in combat until
Panama and the Persian Gulf between 1989 and 1991.
