C5-1d CLUES, EXPLANATIONS, BRIEF COMMENTARY:

  In order *judged*, which was different than the order
  received --- I took considerable pains to separate the
  clues from their authors. I say this to pre-dispel the
  impression that this series of contests is some sort of
  Jake-and-Brian mutual admiration society.

  I've deliberately tried to keep comments brief. If I
  *didn't* comment on some aspect of a clue, it means I found
  it at least acceptable, if not downright good.

>From Phil Rose (pvr@wg.icl.co.uk)

 Word 1 - GRUESOME (1 across)

 Word 2 - OSTRICH  (20 down)

20. Love Christ in a confused manner: stick one's head in the sand (7)

Explanation
Love      - O
Christ in a confused manner
          - anagram CHRIST=>STRICH

16. Consider it has teeth and used them (8)

Explanation
Consider  - Definition
It has teeth - COG
.... and used them [ie the teeth] - IT ATE

======
Comments:
Clue 1: I prefer "pure" homophone clues to this charade
hybrid; cryptically speaking, "is" would be more accurate than "are"
Clue 2: Definition part is "verb" when it should be "noun"
Clue 3: I'm not partial to "it" doing double duty in the
cryptic, and it feels like the tense of the surface is
mismatched ("has"; "used")

------------------------------------------------------------

>From Dave Fisher (dfisher@interlinx.qc.ca)

GRUESOME (1 across)
Cultivated herb is said to be bloody awful (8)
cultivated herb = GREW SOME = GRUESOME
is said = phone indicator
to be = equator
bloody awful = definition

OSTRICH  (20 down)
Head burier is well off after last frost (7)
head burier = definition
is = equator
well off after last frost = OST + RICH

COGITATE (16 down)
O, cigarettes without resin is crazy. Think about it (8)
o, cigarettes = anagram = COGITATE + RES
without resin = without 'res' in = removal indicator
is crazy = anagram indicator
think about it = definition
======
Comments:
Clue 1: Perhaps I'm dense, but shouldn't "cultivated herb"
translate homophonically to "grew some {plant kingdom noun}"?
Clue 2: Don't like "last" to mean "the arbitrary number of
last letters of" (I prefer "*the* last letter of")
Clue 3: Too many words between the anagram indicator and
its fodder; not fond of anagram/subtract clues, personally

------------------------------------------------------------

Comments:
Clue 1: Watch that spelling! Good homophone clue
Clue 2: Good clue; nice surface
Clue 3:  Another acceptable clue

------------------------------------------------------------

>From Matthew Merzbacher (matthew@mills.edu)

Frightful speech, expanded a bit (8)
  Frightful      = defn.
  speech         = homonym indicator
  expanded a bit = grew some

  (perhaps this is a political statement about Pat Buchannan)

Big Bird holdings: roost riches (7)
  Big Bird     = defn.
  holdings:    = container indicator
  roOST RICHes = container fodder

Think I belong in run-down cottage (8)

  I         = insertion fodder
  belong in = insert in
  run-down  = anagram indicator
  cottage   = anagram fodder  COGTATE + I => COGITATE
======
Comments:
Clue 1: Surface a bit vague, even with the political spin
in the explanation; indicator marginally acceptable
Clue 2: "Holding" (no "s") would have been a more accurate
indicator
Clue 3:  Good clue all-around

------------------------------------------------------------

>From Robert Galejs (galejs@ll.mit.edu)

Ghastly voice rose slightly (8)

Ghastly = gruesome (definition)
voice = homophone indicator
rose =grew

Elmo's trichinosis consumed Big Bird (7)

A Sesame Street Epidemic, perhaps?
(Both Elmo and Big Bird are Characters on the show)

Big Bird = ostrich (definition)

elmostrichinosis
   ^^^^^^^

Refurbished cottage, I think (8)

Sounds like an inexperienced realtor to me...

think = cogitate (definition)
refurbished = anagram indicator
cottagei = anagram fodder
======
Comments:
Clue 1: Good, reasonably proper half-homophonic clue
Clue 2: Pre-school cryptics? I guess trichinosis is
harsher on birds than humans! Elmo is far less well-known
a CTW icon than Bird Bird, in my opinion
Clue 3: An okay clue, I think

======
Comments:
Clue 1:  Good clue, all-around
Clue 2: Another clue for the under-7 crowd --- must be that
semi-tuned bunch of kids at the beginning of the show; I struggled
a bit with the acceptability of "crosses", eventually deeming it legit
Clue 3:  I feel like I'm watching a late-night infomercial, with
the not-entirely-welcome ability to read the participants' minds.
Excellent cryptic, fake-out included

>From Murray Smith (smithmw@direct.ca)

Word 1 - GRUESOME (1 across)
Clue: Disgusting urge some develop (8)
Type: Simple anagram clue
Explanation:
	Disgusting = definition
	urge some = anagram fodder
	develop = anagram indicator

Word 2 - OSTRICH (20 down)
Clue: He avoids danger, blindly finding lost riches (7)
Type: Hidden word clue
Explanation:
	He avoids danger, blindly = definition (using ostrich figuratively)
	finding = hidden word indicator
	l(OST RICH)es = hidden word container
Surface: Suggests an Indiana Jones-type character.

Word 3 - COGITATE - (16 down)
Clue: Sleep on tooth that one swallowed (8)
Type: Charade clue
Expalnation:
	Sleep on = definition (To sleep on a problem is to ponder it)
	tooth = COG
	that one = IT
	swallowed = ATE
	(COG)(IT)(ATE)
Surface: Suggests the practice of putting lost milk teeth under child's
	pillow for the tooth fairy - this one not very milky however.
======
Comments:
Clue 1: Simple, true; but effective
Clue 2: Actually, it seems Jones *attracts* danger rather
than avoiding it; the hidden-word is a bit too obvious (as "lost
riches" contains practically the same sounds as "ostrich")
Clue 3: Surface isn't very sensible --- how does one sleep on
something that's already been swallowed?

------------------------------------------------------------

>From Lev Polinsky (polinsky@fas.harvard.edu)

Ostrich:

No fire escapes from First Reich--it won't come to terms with danger.(7)

No -- O (as in zero)
firSTReICH less fire is STRICH
O + STRICH
An ostrich (besides the flightless bird) is someone who won't face danger.
(fire escapes as in fire ladders, btw)

Gruesome:

Shocking--Ed Moses can't finish up races, gives Golds back.

Shocking -- gruesome
Ed MOSEs -- material for de-finalization
can't finish -- de-finalization indicator      EMOSE
Up Races Gives -- acronym fodder
Golds (as in top spots) -- acronym indicator URG
Back -- reversal indicator                     emoseurg--gruesome

I know this is a bit on the hard/complicated side, but every puzzle's
gotta have one or two challenging charades.

Cogitate:

Think about pawn at the end, after one last gambit. (8)

Think about -- cogitate (both dictionaries I've got allow the 'about' as
part of a definition)
pawn -- cog (both can be used to signify a subordinate person acting on
someone else's orders)
the end -- e (end of the word 'the')
at the end -- at + e
one -- i
last gambit -- t
cog + (ate after it) = cogitate
======
Comments:
Clue 1: Well, of course not; the First Reich was the Holy
Roman Empire --- why would there be fire escapes in the
18th Century? I'm not thrilled by the cryptic "fire-removal"
or the definition
Clue 2: Nice surface theme, but the cryptic is *so* complex,
and "golds" as a first-letter indicator is too indirect
Clue 3: Good clue, particularly the chess-y surface

COGITATE
--------

Consider wheel it devoured (8)

I think we're talking woodworm ruining a cartwheel here.
======
Comments:
Clue 1: Good clue, although "hideous" is slightly at odds
with my impression of "rogue" as "charming mischief-maker"
Clue 2: "a" and "deserved" appear extraneous; the definition,
unqualified as it is, is insufficient
Clue 3: Marvelously compact cryptic; surface, though, was
hard to fathom without the accompanying explanation

Comments:
Clue 1: An accountant's nightmare, apparently; perhaps a comment
from the studio CPA for "Waterworld"? A tie for the best homophone
clue of the bunch, in my book, as it uses a soundalike for "some"
as well as "grue"
Clue 2: Good clue, all-around; the surface called to mind any
number of cheesy "Sinbad"-type movies of the 1960s and 1970s
Clue 3: Great surface; I could wish that "cot" = "house"
for something other than animals, cryptically speaking

 Word 1 - GRUESOME (1 across)

Ghastly report became gross (8)

"Ghastly" - def.
"report"  - homophone ind.
"became" - GREW (as in "he grew weaker every day")
"gross"   - SUM

Surface: TV coverage of a plane crash focuses in on mangled corpses?

Note: tried for an &lib (like "became gross, we hear!") but couldn't describe
      an adjective with the surface.

 Word 2 - OSTRICH  (20 down)

Price reduced 25% on expensive bird (7)

"Price reduced 25%" - (C)OST
"expensive" - RICH (it's in the thesaurus)
"bird" - unimaginative def.

Surface: Sale Sign for exotic pet store?

 Word 3 - COGITATE (16 down)

Soldier, nestled in bed, had breakfast to think about (8)

"Soldier" - GI
"nestled in" - container ind. ("in" by itself left me with a dull surface).
"bed" - COT
"had breakfast" - ATE
"to think about" - def. CO(GI)T+ATE

Surface: Most soldiers probably think about drills, choking the Sarge, etc.
======
Comments:
Clue 1:  Another "whole homophone"; surface-wise, I don't see
much difference between "ghastly" and "gross", so one would "be"
the other rather than "become" it
Clue 2: Good clue, all-around; either a pet-shop sign, or one
in the poultry section of a grocery store whose refrigerator
isn't working!
Clue 3:  Must be the by-product of the all-volunteer military;
another good clue --- solid cryptic (for those of the UK, I'm
equally "at ease" with non-US military abbreviations, like RN)

Comments:
Clue 1: Not bad, as acrostics go, but you've got "grisly"
doubling as both definition and part of the cryptic, which is
wise to do only with true &lit clues
Clue 2:  Good clue
Clue 3: The surface doesn't really appeal to me
