  * Replaced gets with fgets because GCC complains about it.

  * Place words into the grid in order from longest to shortest.
    This seems to dramatically improve the speed of the algorithm
    with no obvious deterioration in the quality of the puzzle.
    The big words drop easily into an almost empty grid, then the
    smaller words are just slotted in around them.

  * Allow north-west and south-west words by default.
