Hello all,

Chris arrived fairly late yetserday evening and so we decided to wait
til this morning to do any work. We did have an enjoyable dinner last
night though ;-)

This morning we had some problems getting the DECtape operational - due
I believe, to the cold temp. Once running the DECtape worked all day
without a glitch. We left the machine running tonight so we won't have
that problem tomorrow.

In view of the DECtape not working at first we tackled the paper tapes
first. After some problems we decided that the easiest and surest way
was to PIP the tapes to a DECtape, then dump the tape. By that time the
DECtape were running.

On the FTP site, the file 'ptapes.dta' is a SIMH image of the DECtape
containing the following files:

   LPAINK SRC
   HAL70 DEF
   HAL70B SRC
   HAL70C SRC
   HAL70E SRC
   ECCE SRC
   ECCEB SRC

The other files on the image are failed attempts. The file 'tapelog'
shows that for the three HAL70 we got parity errors at different points.
It should not be too difficult to splice together a good version.

Similarily for ECCE.SRC and ECCEB.SRC.

We then tackled teh DECtapes. We tried PIP directory listings of each
tape which we numbered 01 to 29. Those listings are in the file 'tdirs'
Chris immediately noted the importance of tape22 and we dumpped that one
and tapes 01 and 02, the corresponding files on the site are
'tape22.dta', tape01.dta' and 'tape02.dta'

Tapes numbers 1 through 4 are the four you were particularly interested
in. Of these only 1 and 2 show coherent directories and we took images
of them.

Many tapes show no coherent directoy listing, this could be because
they are not PDP-9 tapes, or that they are binary tapes. Tomorrow we
will see if we can find a tape that could be an IMP bootable tape.

Check the tdir file and if there are any of the tapes which you
particularly want to see dumps of let me know and we can do those first.
Otherwise we plan on copying all the tapes to blank DECtapes so that I
can dump them later on after Chris leaves (Copying a tape is much
quicker than dumping them).

I think we can say today was successful, let me know what you can get
frorm the tapes we have already dumped.

Regards,
