Fred King designed and built the 68000-series based Advanced Personal Machine microcomputers for the Computer Science department in the days before the X86 series was a twinkle in IBM's eye, never mind the rise of Microsoft. These were the first serious micro-based systems at Edinburgh. The source code is available online. These systems were frequently referred to in the CS Dept as "Fred Machines".
Brian Foley has written an MSc thesis on the APM which gives a very good background on both the history and technology of the system. Brian plans to get the operating system running again under emulation for this project.
