Fred King designed and built the 68000-series based Advanced Personal Machine microcomputers for the Computer Science department in the days before the X86 series was a twinkle in IBM's eye, never mind the rise of Microsoft. These were the first serious micro-based systems at Edinburgh. The [http://www.gtoal.com/athome/edinburgh/APM source code] is available online. These systems were frequently referred to in the CS Dept as "Fred Machines". Brian Foley has written an [http://history.dcs.ed.ac.uk/archive/docs/foley-thesis-APM.pdf MSc thesis on the APM] which gives a very good background on both the history and technology of the system. Brian plans to get the operating system running again under emulation for this project.
