Can you afford a teenager to come over in the afternoons for an hour or so to take care of whatever needs you have? Wouldn't a good kid take care of most of your help needs? If so, there are lots of nice kids out there I'm sure. I cannot believe that you ask this question if you have paid any attention whatsoever to various posts over the many months you have been on Words-L. Taking them in order: 1. Yes, I have friends. However, they are mostly my age (69) or older than I, and not into carrying heavy stuff any more than I am. 2. Neighbors: I am in a rural area with very few "neighbors," given the distance between homes. There are the Italians across the road, but they are here only on weekends, and I do not speak Italian, in order to ask them favors. I know prego, but that is about it. I do have some neighbors not too far away who have grammar school kids who have shoveled snow for me. I would hesitate to ask them to do what I need done. They are too young. 3. Classmates. Surely you jest? I haven't had a classmate in 47 years. 4. My social groups are bridge players and the garden club. See #1. 5. Church. I do not attend church. 6. My house did not come with a building handyman. That would have been a plus. alyce -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 10:16:14 -0400 From: alyce cresap Subject: Re: change of life Marie Ascher wrote: > > > Can you afford a teenager to come over in the afternoons for an hour or so > to take care of whatever needs you have? Yes, to both Rita and you. Of course this is the answer for most things (except shopping), and one that I have known from the start. It remains to find one who is reliable and who has a car. I am not about to go to pick him/her up after school. I have access to one boy, but it would require me to do that. (The school is three miles away.) alyce -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 10:17:46 -0400 From: "Bethany K. Taking them in order: I am speaking only of/from my experience, not yours, of course. A lot of my friends are my age or older - but they also range in age from a few years to much older than me. And to me classmates are classmates for life. Etc. The bottom line is that I cannot imagine geting myself into the kind of living situation you describe, in which there are NO people available to help, be helped by. I understand that you ARE in that situation, and I wish that I could suggest something that would be helpful to you - learn Italian? Join a new social group? (I would not dare suggest that you go to church, of course.) You may recall that I went through some of this with my mother, who is extremely reluctant to pay anyone to do anything. I found great, totally reliable individuals through AA. I often feel blessed to be an alcoholic. Access to AA is one reason. Some lifting and lugging required." Then you save up your tasks for Saturday or Sunday morning and give some person $20 for two hours of work carrying the stuff to the basement and lugging book boxes around. --bonniev -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 10:38:58 -0400 From: bonniev Subject: Re: moving stuff >The bottom line is that I cannot imagine geting myself into the kind >of living situation you describe, in which there are NO people available >to help, be helped by. --Bethany I can picture being in that situation myself. I am writing in respect of a foreign customer of my bank with account number 14-255-2004/utb/t who perished in a plane crash [Korean Air Flight 801] with the whole passengers aboard on August 6, 1997. Since the demise of this our customer, I personally has watched with keen interest to see the next of kin but all has proved abortive as no one has come to claim his funds of usd.20.5 m, [twenty million five hundred thousand united states dollars] which has been with my branch for a very long time. On this note, I decided to seek for whom his name shall be used as the next of kin as no one has come up to be the next of kin. And the banking ethics here does not allow such money to stay more than six years, because money will be recalled to the bank treasury as unclaimed after this period. In view of this I got your contact through a trade journal after realizing that your name and country is similar to the deceased. I will give you 25% of the total. Upon the receipt of your response, I will send you by fax or e-mail the application, bank's fax number and the next step to take. I will not fail to bring to your notice that this business is hitch free and that you should not entertain any fear as all modalities for fund transfer can be finalized within five banking days, after you apply to the bank as a relation to the deceased. When you receive this letter. Kindly send me an e-mail signifying your decision including your private Tel/Fax numbers for quick communication. Ken moved here with me from the city. Then he met a girl from California and went there in 1995. They broke up. Then he met his fiance on the Internet and they arranged that she would get to Canada (from Lebanon) and he would come back here, so that they could get to know each other and be sure it was true love. So he has commuted to Montreal just about every other weekend since Oct. 1998 till now. Often he took three-day weekends, and occasioally a whole week. But we arranged things so that I had everything I needed before he left and I didn't need stuff carried in between times. They could not easily get married until she got her Canadian citizenship. That makes it easier for her to become a permanent resident than if she is Lebanese, one of the Arabs, you know? So she became a citizen a couple of weeks ago and will have her passport on November 1. And that is why Ken is going at this time. alyce -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 20:51:24 -0400 From: alyce cresap Subject: Re: change of life Natalie Maynor wrote: > Otoh, maybe he and his wife will decide they'd rather live in > Germantown. > Oh, no, they both detest the cold. As fate decreed, he returned here just the day after I went into the hospital, and so was here to nurse me back to life. Had he not been here, they would indeed have sent me to a nursing home. It's been 3 weeks since my last shopping trip. Whatever happened to that senior citizens' assistance group out there? It didn't work out? I forget. Is it possible that someone from there could take you to the store every week or two? We have here RSVP--Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and they have volunteers for just such purposes. Do you have TTY (or TDD) for your phone so that you can type in your message and read the replies? If not, you should definitely get it right away. It is about $500 to buy the system, but I think you can rent it for a few dollars a month. Here is the info: http://www.captions.com/tty.html call your local phone company. alyce -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 22:44:13 -0400 From: alyce cresap Subject: Re: egocentric post Rita Chapman wrote: > > Don't you have grocery stores that deliver?
