In response to a request on the words-l chat today, here are as many files of the group postings as I could find. all-words-l-files-on-grahams-backups.txt is a list of all the files on my home backup drive that include 'words-l' or 'wordsl' in their filenames. I've uploaded whatever files from the above that I could identify as mailboxes. If you spot any files in that list which look like they might contain old posts, let me know and I'll check them out and upload them if they are indeed words-l postings. There are probably some more postings to be found in my generic mailbox backups but I have to go through 'stuff_in_my_mailboxes.txt' and filter out the posts specifically to words-l. This is a lot of work that I don't plan to do unless there is a strong reason for doing so, more than just nostalgia, and they don't seem to go back as far as is wanted. I haven't yet found archives for the late 80's or most of the 90's. I'm pretty sure someone did make backups at the time but I'm not sure that I have them. My hosting service is a bit twitchy and may ask me to take down these files because they always seem to be short of space despite this having been advertised as an 'unlimited' storage service, so download whatever you want as soon as you can. I'll probably delete all this anyway in a couple of weeks. There's also the LISTSERV archives at https://listserv.uga.edu/archives/words-l.html but those start around Y2K. https://groups.google.com/g/bit.listserv.words-l appears to have 40347 posts but I don't see an easy way to download them all at once and most of the ones I paged through looked like spam. However they do date back to at least 1991 so if you're looking for something specific perhaps the search box there might help. The google archive of bit.listserv.words-l and the uga archive between them ought to cover the whole history of the group.
